Our new Chinese born daughter in law is so very homesick and I want to make the Mid Autumn Festival special for her.
I have to say the cooking is very intimidating to me but am going to try my best.
Thank you for the lanterns info as well.
Wish me luck!

Hi Barbara, thank you for writing! The Mid-Autumn Festival takes place every year between September 8 and October 7 on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Store bought vs. homemade mooncakes are a matter of personal taste, for sure! ~Wes

Love your web page. And, whoops! As I suspected, the holiday has already passed. However, it being a Friday the 13th micro Harvest moon, I had gone out to view the moon. As I live in Seattle, I had to “will” the rain clouds to part for a few seconds of moon viewing.
Is the festival always in September? Which taste better, store bought or homemade mooncakes? Last year Costco sold them, but the person manning the table was fiercely guarding the tasting samples for Chinese only. Or, so it seemed to me. As you know, they can be pricey, so I would not purchase without tasting first. Also, I’m not sure about the concept of intensely salted egg yolks. Seems they are very important, however. I just had some very yummy round durian pastries or cakes. I pretended they were mooncakes with nothing stamped on them. The durian was thankfully used sparingly!

Not a weird question at all, Carmel. Yes, you can eat the food after arranging and blessing it. ~Wes

I guess you’re supposed to eat it?
