Sounds really interesting, Phillip. I’ll email you shortly and see if I can’t help connect you with others who can help. ~Wes

I have been attempting to put together a gallery show of festivals/traditions related to death. I am on the board of directors of a gallery that has had a Day of the Dead show for several years and I would like to expand that to include a variety of cultures. Would you happen to know anyone in the Bay Area that has done artwork or presentations related to the Hungry Ghost Festival?

Hi Meghan, What you’re seeing is quite common in China. The chalk circles are intended to protect the burning joss paper on its journey to the spirit world. ~Wes

I read your blog with great interest. Living in Xi’an China, I often see chalk circles on the sidewalks during this time. They always have an ” opening”. What can you tell us about these? (Joss papers are burned inside them.)
Thanks
